Stop Shark Finning!

Sharks have been here for 400 million years, waaaay before dinosaurs even existed! If life on earth is a 'Survival of the Fittest', then the sharks may very well be the undisputed champions... Then along came man. Though claiming to be the superior race, humans have always been notorious for their acts of ignorance and stupidity. For example, what do you call it when millions of sharks are being savagely killed - to the point of extinction - just to be able to serve people a dish which is popular, not for its delectable flavor, but because having this on your dinner table is a status symbol? Ha.

'Shark Fin Soup' is bombarded with seasoning, spices, and stock for flavor. The fin itself is tasteless. Its sole purpose is to add a glutinous texture to the soup. That's it. We are driving a champion race to extinction just so we can sip on slippery soup. We are pulling sharks out of the water, beating them to submission, sawing off their fins and tails, and throwing them back into the ocean with no way to swim, making them helplessly torpedo to the ocean floor to suffocate or bleed to (a slow, painful) death - just so we can show the dumb guy sitting on the next table that we are perched higher up on the ladder than he is. If this doesn't make your blood boil or bring tears to your eyes, then I would love to drag you onto a boat, cut off your arms and legs, and throw you overboard. Let's see if THAT doesn't change your opinion on this!

90% of the shark population is gone from our waters due to finning and long lining. Depending on its species, it takes somewhere between 12-30 years for a shark to mature and be able to reproduce. At the rate we're going, our grandchildren will learn about sharks in the same way we learned about dinosaurs. And when they find out the reason behind the disappearance of these magnificent creatures, they will abhor us for being so shallow and stupid.

Shark finning is a multi-billion dollar industry, making it very difficult to fight. But we have to do something, and we have to do it now! Spread awareness! Use Facebook, MySpace, Twitter; Show "Sharkwater" to your friends; Join Sea Shepherd; Rally against shark finning; Go out to sea and take long lines out of the water! Another major thing you can do is boycott establishments that serve Shark Fin Soup. But let them know why you and your friends are never going to give them business again! Make them aware of how stupid they are actually being.
Remember, when the buying stops, the killing can too.
